Battery recycling plays a crucial role in promoting the transition towards electromobility in a sustainable manner

Battery recycling allows us to recover valuable materials contained in end of life (EOL) EV batteries and production scrap and to reintegrate them into the production cycle.

This process reduces the dependency on primary mining sources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

We thereby help to minimize the environmental impact of batteries while establishing a local supply of recycled metals.

We are strategically investing in battery recycling capabilities

Battery recycling is an important contributor to BASF's efforts to drive the transformation towards a sustainable future.

Our asset landscape is being developed to support the growing demand for Battery Recycling:

Base metal refinery prototype plant
The prototyping plant is a key component for the success of our commercial base metal refinery. The plant is located in Schwarzheide, Germany and has successfully started operating in 2024.
Commercial scale black mass plant
We are taking the next step to establish the full battery recycling value chain with a commercial scale black mass plant. It is part of our battery materials and recycling cluster in Schwarzheide, Germany and will have an annual processing capacity of 15,000 tons of EV batteries and production scrap. Ready for start up is scheduled in 2024.

We have built up a strong partner network in all key regions

We have built a strong partner network that enables the safe handling, transportation, and recycling of old electric vehicle (EV) batteries and production scrap.

This partner network covers all steps along the battery recycling value chain, from logistics to discharging and dismantling, as well as black mass production and refining.

We are fully committed to ensuring compliance with the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) along the entire value chain.

Our approach is environmentally sustainable, locally focused, and geared towards the responsible management of valuable raw materials.

Collaborations

We are forming collaborations with key players in the battery industry. By joining forces, we can leverage our expertise, resources, and networks to further optimize our offer for the battery industry.
